Chapter 15

The Plaza La Libertad was exceptionally charming with wide pathways, an open square, grassed areas and raised flower beds. Ivy was tempted to suggest they had a coffee at a nearby cafe, but she really did want to get up close and personal with the sea, and she couldn’t even see it from there, so they carried on, dawdling down a tiny street or two until Ivy spotted the tell-tale blue of the ocean at the end of one of them.

They emerged onto a wide road with a promenade bordered by black volcanic rock and glistening water beyond.

Ivy took a deep breath of the salty air and smiled. This is what she’d been yearning for – a nice walk along a scenic sea front. And, although she knew she wasn’t on holiday, today certainly felt like it. What must it be like to have this holiday feeling whenever you wanted it, she mused. She was happy enough to live up in the stunning mountains with the fabulous views as it was only a short jaunt to the seaside. Work and play, all in the space of a few miles. It was the best of both worlds in her opinion, and the more she considered the possibility of making Tenerife her home, the more it appealed to her and felt like the right thing to do.

She hardly dared breathe as Sebastián took her hand again and led her off the pavement and down a slope towards the rocks, and as she walked her eyes widened in surprise and pleasure. The crazy paved path they had stepped onto, widened out into a space for people to sunbathe, or to swim in the sea pools which were carved out of the dark volcanic rock. Walkways meandered between the pools and metal ladders like the ones seen at swimming pools allowed easy access into the water. It wasn’t quite the beach she’d been anticipating, but there were benches dotted around and there was a restaurant located at the far end of the sea pools.

‘Fancy a coffee?’ she asked as they dodged sunbathers and wet squealing children, and headed in the direction of the restaurant. It looked to be the perfect place to sit and people watch as well as to take in the glorious view of the sea and the shoreline.

Every now and again, a particularly large wave would break against the rocks which shielded the natural seawater pools from the ocean and the resultant spray would rise into the air, sending a fine mist everywhere. Some waves gushed over the barrier rocks, freshening the water in the pools with each surge, and soaking anyone who ventured too close.

The restaurant was situated far enough away to avoid drenching its clientele, yet it was close enough for diners to enjoy the action.

‘What a perfect spot,’ Ivy declared, spying a free table and heading determinedly towards it, dragging a laughing Sebastián along in her wake.

She dropped down into a chair and let out a contented sigh.
